This versatile dog breed seems to be everywhere that a dog can be of help, from war torn countries to areas where natural disasters have occurred. The powerful German Shepherd will strike terror in the hearts of criminals one minute and endure the overly affectionate attention of little children the next.

German Shepherds were bred to be guardians and the breed still has a very strong protective instinct. A dog that is high strung or nervous should never be bred, as the resulting puppies can be untrustworthy. However, most German Shepherds are wonderful dogs and devoted to their families, including children and other pets.

The German Shepherd is a fairly large dog, weighing from sixty to seventy five pounds and standing twenty two to twenty six inches tall. This breed has erect ears, dark, intelligent eyes, and a graceful tail. The German Shepherd is most commonly black and tan, although gray and tan or black and gray dogs are also available. A striking all white dog, commonly called an Alsatian, is popular with many people. If you like the look of the Alsatian, be sure you meet the puppy’s parents, as these white German Shepherds can sometimes be a bit high strung.

Although German Shepherds are high energy animals, they can live in the city. Just be aware that you will have to exercise your dog frequently and that he will be miserable if you leave him alone for long hours without giving him a job to do. Of course, a house with a big yard in a rural area is ideal.

Since your German Shepherd will rapidly grow into a big, powerful dog, you may want to enrol him in obedience classes while he is a puppy. It is much easier to control a small puppy than a full grown untrained dog. In addition, puppy obedience classes also help provide another important benefit for your German Shepherd puppy, socialization to other dogs and people. Many people who own these intelligent dogs make the unfortunate mistake of thinking that their dogs need to be trained as guard dogs. However, this training can lead to aggression if your dog is not trained properly. Since German Shepherds are naturally protective, they do not need attack dog training to guard your home.

The German Shepherd’s coat requires little grooming. The dense coat is coarse and does not mat easily. Brush your dog once a week to remove dirt and debris. If you live in the city, concrete will probably wear down your Shepherd’s nails. However, if your dog lives in a rural area he may need to have his nails trimmed several times a year.

German Shepherds need to eat a nutritional food that is formulated for large breed dogs. If your Shepherd is a working dog, you may need to feed him a high protein food. A good dog vitamin is also a smart idea.

This loyal, smart breed commonly suffers from hip dysplasia or epilepsy. To see one of these dignified dogs suffering from either disease is heart breaking. Please be sure that your puppy’s breeder has had the parents tested to be sure they do not carry these diseases.

If you want a dog who will be protective and loyal, then a German Shepherd may be the right dog for you and your family.

Further Dog Training Tips http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/08/10/further-dog-training-tips/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/08/10/further-dog-training-tips/#comments Sun, 10 Aug 2008 06:53:31 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/?p=55 Dog training doesn’t need you to be a fearless Hercules, all it asks of you is to keep a few basics in mind. First, establish who the boss is, remind your dog again and again that you are the one on two feet while he is still on all fours, and you are the "pack leader". Second, speak in a tone which oozes superiority, something on the lines of your first grade math teacher. Third, routine is everything so keep your training tactics consistent. Once you master these three techniques you will be the master of every single dog around!

Your heart might melt into a mush every time your cute little pup cocks his head, but don’t let that get in the way of your establishing who the master is. Go gooey eyed too frequently and you are likely to pay with your carpets and sandals, which it will most merrily chew through. Treat your pup the way you would treat a little kid, setting it strict boundaries and letting it know what goes and what most definitely doesn’t. Establish gestures like pointing etc. which will give the dog a cue to act in a certain way.

You might not think it possible but dogs, like your kids, can tell when you mean business, slacken up a bit with them and they’ll know you can be taken for a ride. Interestingly enough they also have this instinct for intonation; be strict when you want him to stay put at the yard, but be enthusiastic when you are asking him if he would like to go for a walk. It’s funny how you’ll see your own mood reflected in his responses. This is the primary step for you to establish the kind of communication with your dog which will allow you to calm him or set him up for work with a single word.

One of the main methods of training your dog is to keep a certain consistency in your approach towards him. Keep your intonations, gestures and words for expressing dissatisfaction the same every time, so that he gets used to the idea easily. A young pup who grows up with a certain set of commands will respond to them more promptly than one who is frequently confused by conflicting orders. The more consistent your commands are, the better trained your dog is, the better trained your dog is the greater your confidence in him regarding his obedience to you. A few other ways of establishing consistency are to use the same door when taking your doggie out for a walk, give him the same kind of pat every night before retiring for the day, so that he knows exactly what time it is.

Little things like these will help you predict your dog’s behavior more accurately. Most importantly, however, remember to shower your love and affection on the little one - but only when he deserves it, continue your training through little games which he might enjoy, and remember to treat him every time he does a task well, after all like a child it too needs to be appreciated and given its bit of fun.

A Collar For Your Pup http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/08/09/a-collar-for-your-pup/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/08/09/a-collar-for-your-pup/#comments Sat, 09 Aug 2008 06:51:29 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/?p=53 Dog collars are available in a selection of forms, dimensions and fashions, and are much of a style statement these days. A dog collar may well be a reprieve for your puppy if, God forbid, it runs away from your home.

With such an extensive selection of dog collars to be had, opting for the appropriate one for your puppy can be to a certain extent nerve racking. The collar ought to be chosen depending upon your choices and your puppy’s behavior. For a rather docile puppy, a collar made up of soft cloth is fairly suitable. On the other hand, a stubborn puppy has to be restricted by a fast jerk of a spiked collar. A dog trainer may give you a hand in making the appropriate selection of a dog collar for your loyal canine buddy.

The buckle range is mainly the regular sort of dog collar. A broad selection of cloth may be used to make up a buckle collar, featuring a variety of colors and designs. Your puppy’s name may be stitched on top of the collar for recognition reasons. Buckle collar is made up of a sequence of spaced holes, and the buckle is fixed firmly to arrive at the desired size.

Buckle collar is the most standard type, which can be improved to make sure of additional protection for the puppy. For example, breakaway collars are planned to pull to pieces under excessive trauma. A few collar styles are set with discharge flaps that make sure of a quick taking away of the collar, comparative to the usual buckle style. Such differences may perhaps help out to avoid your puppy from gasping in unexpected state of affairs.

One more collar style is a prong collar, which is fairly of assistance if your puppy is to a certain extent stiff and usually pulls hard while on leash. A prong collar has vertical metal prongs that are spaced in an even way in the region of the inside of the collar. Upon tugging the attached strap, the prongs poke your puppy’s neck, in this manner slowing down its disorderly actions. The expression "prong collar" does sound as a bit unsafe for your canine. Nevertheless, when used properly, prong collars by no means cause any harm to the puppy, and are a great deal safer than even other styles of dog collars.

Tips For Training Your Dog http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/08/08/tips-for-training-your-dog/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/08/08/tips-for-training-your-dog/#comments Fri, 08 Aug 2008 00:50:23 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/?p=51 Before you start training your dog, it is best that you know what options you have. Nowadays you can find many types of dog training, in many different places. These trainings vary in price and each one them has something different to offer.

The first type of dog training is known as puppy preschool. This is a dog training course meant for puppies that are about 6 weeks to 5 months old. These puppy preschool classes generally last for no more than 6 to 8 weeks. In these training sessions, your puppy is essentially taught how to socialize with people and as well as other puppies. Here your puppy also begins to learn how to sit down, stay at a place, and how to come.

The second type of dog training course is meant for the dogs that are at least 5 months old. This type of dog training is known as the basic dog training. The duration of these classes is usually about 8 to 10 weeks. This is the basic course, where your dog is taught the art of walking properly on a leash, sitting, staying, coming and heeling.

The third type of dog training course is known as the intermediate dog training. This dog training aims at teaching the dog mostly the same things that are taught in the basic training course, in a more detailed form. Here the dog is trained to stay for a longer span of time, and is also taught to follow the orders given by other people.

The intermediate dog training generally lasts for about 8 to 10 weeks, and is meant for those that are no less than 5 months old. It is essential for the dog to have completed its basic dog training course, or to be accustomed to the basic commands that could have been taught by the owner.

The next type of training course is known as the advanced dog training course. Here, once again, the course is quite similar to its previous one, i.e., the intermediate dog training course, except for the fact that this time it is more detailed. Here, the dog is taught how to sit even without you in the view.

This training course is about 8 to 10 weeks long, and is meant for those that have completed their intermediate training. Here, they are also trained to walk beside their owners without a leash. Moreover, it gradually prepares the dog to take the Canine Good Citizen training course.

The Canine Good Citizen training for dogs is the last course. To pass this course, your dog will be taught the 10 necessary aspects.

This course is strictly meant for those dogs that have completed all the previous courses. The test is quite tough and can only be passed if the dog is really well behaved. Depending on whether your dog can pass, the course can last for several weeks.

Keeping this information in mind, you should be able to decide the dog training course best suited for your dog. However, you may seek the opinion of your local dog trainers to know more. Many trainers consult for free. So now you should be at least a step closer to introducing your dog into a training course!

Pet Urine on the Carpet? http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/07/11/pet-urine-on-the-carpet/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/07/11/pet-urine-on-the-carpet/#comments Fri, 11 Jul 2008 08:07:25 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/07/11/pet-urine-on-the-carpet/ We all love the way dogs play fetch and run and jump and roll around and lick us affectionately and pee all over the carpet and…

Pee all over the carpet? Well we don’t love that aspect of dog ownership, now do we?

Dogs can be housebroken and trained to let their owners know when they need to go outside and make a little weedle or some other bigger job, but before that happens – and sometimes afterwars – the interior of your home becomes Rover’s marked territory. The stains and smells of Phydeaux’s little mishaps and dishonorable discharges can leave a lasting impression on rugs and carpets, furniture, and other items in your home if they’re not taken care of immediately.

If you’re fortunate enough to catch Duke in the act of relieving himself all over the Persian rug that was a gift from your mother-in-law, take the steps that have to do with the dog’s training and then attend to the poodle puddle right away. Use a rag or some paper towels to soak up as much of the mess as possible and then clean the area with a mixture of cold or lukewarm (never hot) water and some sort of cleaning agent. Peroxide works well at removing the chance of a stain as well as the odor, but it should not be used on certain fabrics or dyes. A dab of dishwashing liquid (the kind you use in the sink, not the dishwasher) mixed with water can do a good job on these fresh marks as well.

For stains that have been allowed to sit for a time you’ll need to take slightly more drastic measures. Organic cleansers like Spot Shot work best on stains like these and should be chosen over chemicals. If you do use chemicals, peroxide is your friend once again as it can act as a terrific stain remover. Again you’ll want to dilute with warm water and apply it to the area. Some scrubbing will be necessary, but it should be done as gently as possible, depending on the type of fabric. If we’re talking about carpet, some vigorous scrubbing will probably be okay as the fibers are designed to take a bit of a beating.

If the dirtied items are washable fabrics like clothing, towels, or small throw rugs, the stains should come out in the wash. Put the item in the washer by itself with the regular laundry detergent that you would normally use and some color safe bleach (whites can and should be done with regular chlorine bleach).

The best way to deal with doggie urine stains is to avoid having them happen in the first place, which can be accomplished through training. If the occasional mistake does happen, don’t lose your head. Dogs won’t remember what they’ve done wrong if you chastise them after the event, so letting them know they have done wrong is only useful if caught in the act.

Looking After Your Dog’s Teeth http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/07/11/looking-after-your-dogs-teeth/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/07/11/looking-after-your-dogs-teeth/#comments Fri, 11 Jul 2008 07:25:30 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/07/11/looking-after-your-dogs-teeth/ Dogs generally don’t have dental cavities. even when they have a poor diet.  One study revealed that only 5.8 percent of teeth examined in dogs contained cavities.  And many of the teeth that were found to have cavities were so loose and had such extremely receded gums that those teeth were mostly useless to the dog anyway.

Dogs don’t develop the same type of painful cavities that humans do.  Dog cavities are not a result of decay, but are caused by grinding the tips of the teeth away to the point that the enamel wears off and exposes the pulp of the tooth.

Surprisingly few dogs have dental problems as the direct result of malnutrition during their development growth stages.  Abandoned dogs, and the offspring of abandoned dogs that have never had the benefit of human care and appear to be emaciated or malnourished, will generally be found to have teeth that are as good or better than pets that have been spoiled.

The reason for this is that dogs that are allowed to run wild can just about always find enough bones to provide the calcium and phosphorus necessary for good tooth development.  Their diets may be deficient in minerals that contribute to other health problems, but if a dog can find bones on a regular basis, he will generally have good teeth.  The dogs with the worst teeth are generally those raised in kennels or homes that feed primary dog biscuits and meat-based diets that are deficient in phosphorous.  Dogs that are fed meal-type dog foods, since those feeds generally contain a sufficient amount of dried ground bone, will usually have good teeth.  Bone meal is one of the most inexpensive ingredients that can be added to dog food that will contribute to the dog’s good dental health.

The quality of a dog’s teeth has little to do with the consistency of the food he eats, so canned or dry food in and of itself makes little difference.  It is the mineral content of the food that makes the difference.  The only advantage of dry food over canned is that a food that has an abrasive surface will help clean the teeth.  Dogs that are fed exclusively canned or soft food will generally have heavy tartar deposits.

Giving your dog a big flat beef rib bone, and ensuring the chews it in a place where it can’t be contaminated by worm eggs, is one of the best dental care measures you can take.  Chewing through the bone will keep his teeth clean and white, and ingesting the bone will provide the minerals necessary to keep his teeth healthy.

Beagle Dogs http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/06/08/beagle-dogs/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/06/08/beagle-dogs/#comments Sun, 08 Jun 2008 04:33:16 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/06/08/beagle-dogs/ When you think of Beagles, you probably picture a pack of these little guys baying at the top of their lungs as they race after a fox or rabbit. While it is true that these dogs are popular hunting dogs and have been used to hunt for several centuries, they also make wonderful family pets.

The Beagle has a keen sense of smell and a strong hunting instinct. This member of the American Kennel Club’s hound group actually comes in two sizes, under thirteen inches and thirteen to fifteen inches. Except for the difference in size, both Beagle varieties are identical. The beagle has dark eyes, droopy ears, and a long tail. Its coat is short and most commonly comes in a combination of tan, black and white colors. You can also find orange, black, or tan dogs with white markings.

The Beagle can adapt to apartment life, but may prove to be annoying to neighbors if he constantly warns you of strange noises. These dogs are tireless hunters and need a way to burn off some of that energy, so you will need to take your Beagle for long walks or go for a romp in the park. Think twice before letting him off the leash, however, since a Beagle who is hot on the trail of a rabbit will forget all of his obedience training while he tracks down his prey.

Beagles love children and other dogs, but will probably take every available opportunity to harass the family cat. These dogs are very playful and affectionate, but they do tend to sulk if they don’t get their own way. In fact, these dogs are so sensitive that something as simple as someone laughing at one of them when he has gotten into some mishap can cause the Beagle to brood for days. You may need to warn your children to avoid upsetting your dog’s delicate sensibilities.

Although Beagles occasionally get too caught up in the chase to obey commands, they still should learn at least basic obedience. It will require patience and hard work to teach your dog, and you may want to consider getting some professional help by enrolling your little guy in puppy obedience classes.

Beagles love to eat and they aren’t picky. If you put your dog on a diet, he will happily eat garbage. In fact, even if he isn’t on a diet, he may still hit the trashcans for an after dinner snack.

Your Beagle should be groomed once a week to alleviate shedding. Beagles usually get enough exercise to wear down their toenails on their own, but you may want to check your dog’s nails to see if they need to be trimmed at least once a month.

Beagles are generally a healthy breed. However, some of these dogs can develop heart disease or epilepsy. Of course, with their propensity to overeat, Beagles can also develop weight related diseases.

If you want a dog who is a happy, well mannered little companion, then a Beagle may be the right dog for you.

Clean That Aquarium http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/05/29/clean-that-aquarium/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/05/29/clean-that-aquarium/#comments Thu, 29 May 2008 07:29:45 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/05/29/clean-that-aquarium/ Cleaning your aquarium is perhaps the most important element in caring for fish . If the aquarium is not regularly cleaned , the fish will get sick due to the amount of algae and bacteria that will build up in the water. Cleaning out the tank every other week will ensure the well being of the fish inside and will keep them healthy for a long time.

Never remove all the water from a tank. Turn off the filtration system and begin to siphon water from the bottom of the tank. Since most algae growth occurs on the sides and on the bottom of the tank, using a siphon system that can be purchased from a pet store will remove algae but not the rocks or fish. Removing algae involves scrapping the sides of the tank with a scrapper or razor blade. Don’t use any harsh chemicals as they can harm the fish. It can take a while to scrap all the algae off the tank. Once this has been done, remove more water until there is only half a tank of water left.

Next, clean the filtration system. Wipe the insides of all the parts and remove dead plants and algae from the catches in the filter. This will help when refilling the water to prevent debris from returning to the tank. Thoroughly cleaning every part of the filter and tank will greatly improve the quality of the water. Refill the tank and turn on the filtration system again. The tank should be cleaned again in about two weeks.

Depending on the age of the tank and the filtration system, cleaning times for the tank will vary. In older tanks, cleaning less will preserve good bacteria that eliminate waste and kill germs in the water. This type of build-up will only occur in older tanks. This is why it is recommended that only half the water in the tank be removed when cleaning. This will help preserve the good bacteria in the tank.

Cleaning the fish tank when recommended is essential. When tank is clean, fish are healthier. To keep fish alive longer, it makes sense to clean the tank regularly. When a fish owner places live plants in the tank, these plants will eventually lose leaves which will start to decay either on the tank floor or in the filtration system. Blockages caused by decaying plants could cause the filtration system to malfunction. Cleaning it out every two weeks will help it work better.

If you want to have healthy fish living longer then you must undertake the maintenance required, despite the fact that it may be a little messy and time consuming.

Housebreaking Your Pup http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/05/19/housebreaking-your-pup/ http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/05/19/housebreaking-your-pup/#comments Mon, 19 May 2008 04:50:47 +0000 ronkerr http://theonlinepetclub.com/2008/05/19/housebreaking-your-pup/ Among the most irritating things about pet dogs is their habit of answering to calls of nature just about anywhere they feel like it. Your bedroom rug, the sofa, your Persian carpet; everything seems as good a place as any for your little pup to relieve himself.

As son as you bring your pup home, get ready to save your upholstery and carpets by means of a straight-forward process called housebreaking.

Now, here is what housebreaking is all about. We humans tend to visit the loo when we feel the need to relieve ourselves, in one way or the other, but  our pups don’t have mother potty training them at the age of 1, telling them to take a crap at some fixed time on a shiny blue potty. They therefore tend to treat everything like a lavatory and we have to potty train our pooches ourselves. And this training, to cut a long story short, is what we call ‘housebreaking’.

Points to remember,

• No pup is able to keep himself from peeing or …well…relieving himself in some other form, till about 12 weeks old. Your attempts at training your dog therefore must begin before this.
• Most puppies will need to relieve themselves around 6-7 times a day
• Each time your dog seems to be following its tail rather slowly, and doing circles, put your shoes on to take it out because it’s getting ready to relieve itself
• Take your dog out after every meal it has because food immediately puts pressure on its colon and bladder.

The first lesson in housebreaking is to ‘communicate with your dog’. Make certain you let your dog know that you don’t like him peeing all over the house loud and clear. Don’t be violent; a loud “NO’ should do the trick. For best results catch him in the act so that he associates the rebuke with the exact action.

Watch your pooch. As soon as he looks like he needs to go, take him out. Once he relieves himself at the right place, pat him to show how much you appreciate the fact that he didn’t pee in your house. Give him a treat and a pat and he’ll know.

Dogs are eager to please. They will do almost anything to get cuddled and patted by their masters, therefore it can easy to make them do things you want. You want him to pee outside? Show him how happy you are when he does and he’ll do it always. Do you want him to crap every morning? Give him a friendly pat when you take him outside and he’ll run off to be at it everyday. For your part make sure you know your dog’s habits. Build your routine round his and try to discover what his usual urinating or defecating times are. Is it after dinner? Before going to bed? Or right in the morning? Take him out accordingly.

Communicating with your dog will ensure your pooch’s health and your peace, and a clean and dry house.
